It is prepared commercially by oxidation of ethylene at high temperature in the presence of silver oxide catalyst, followed by hydration of ethylene oxide to yield mono-, with di-, tri- and tetraethylene glycols as co-products.

Structure and physical properties:
Denatonium is a quaternary ammonium cation and its structure is related to the local anesthetic lidocaine, differing only by the addition of a benzyl group to the amino nitrogen.
